frequently asked questions

What can we help with?
  • Am I able to purchase an extended warranty?

For all extended warranty enquiries please contact your local Subaru Retailer.

Check out our Warranty page for more information.

  • How long is the warranty on my Subaru?

All new Subaru vehicles purchased on or after 1st January 2019 come with a 5 Year/Unlimited Kilometre Warranty.

If you purchased your vehicle before the 1st January 2019, your vehicle comes with a 3 Year/Unlimited Kilometre Warranty unless purchased during a campaign period which included an offer of a 2 year manufacturer’s extended warranty. In this instance, your standard 3 Year/Unlimited Kilometre Warranty will automatically have been extended to 5 Years/Unlimited Kilometres.

Your rights under our warranty are in addition to any rights you may have under the Australian Consumer Law.

Check out our Warranty page for more information.

  • I want to modify my Subaru. Will this affect my warranty?

We often receive queries from Subaru owners who are interested in modifying their vehicles, including changing tyre sizes. Whilst we understand that people wish to personalise their vehicle, we are unfortunately unable to recommend or endorse any modifications utilising non-standard or non-factory components.

This is because Subaru Corporation, their engineers and component part suppliers carefully design and carry out extensive testing and/or certification intended to ensure that final production vehicles will perform reliably and safely under normal operating conditions. Put simply, all of the parts fitted to your Subaru from the factory, and/or genuine Subaru Accessories added, have been tested and/or certified to ensure they meet Subaru's exacting standards.

Obviously non-genuine or non endorsed parts and accessories have not been tested or certified by Subaru Corporation. As such adding non-genuine components to your vehicle may have unknown consequences such as an adverse affect on the operating systems of the vehicle and/or may result in damage to other components. Obviously Subaru Australia cannot accept liability for such consequences. Also, it is possible that your Subaru's New Car Warranty may be compromised where a fault occurs that is directly related to, or caused by, a modification utilising non-genuine parts or accessories.

Given the forgoing, Subaru Australia does not recommend any modifications away from the original factory specifications, the only exception being the fitment of Genuine Subaru Parts and Accessories for the relevant model and variant.

Check out our Warranty page for more information.

  • Where do I take my vehicle for warranty repairs?

All authorised Subaru Service Centres will honour your Subaru New Vehicle Warranty. They will repair, replace or adjust any part of the vehicle that is defective in factory workmanships or materials free of charge in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Warranty & Service Handbook.

From time to time we may authorise warranty repair at a non-authorised Subaru Service Centre (such as in remote regions), however you must seek our approval in advance.

Check out our Warranty page for more information.

  • Can I transfer my warranty to a new owner?

The New Vehicle Warranty provided with each new Subaru vehicle is transferable from owner to owner.

The warranty is only applicable in Australia and is not transferable to other countries, as no reciprocal world wide warranty is provided.

Check out our Warranty page for more information.

  • Should I service my Subaru on the due date even if I’m not doing the km’s?

Yes. Your Subaru has an optimum service interval that depends as much on time and driving conditions as it does on distance. Everyone's driving habits are different and therefore so are the service requirements for your vehicle. You should be servicing your vehicle based either on time or distance, whichever occurs first.

In fact, vehicles that are used for regular short, stop-start trips, such as city driving, are often more at risk of premature engine and battery wear as the engine may be working harder. Other fluids in your car, such as brake and transmission fluids, can also deteriorate over time. So to help preserve and maintain the performance, safety and retained value of your Subaru, make sure you follow the recommended service intervals specific to your model.

Check your Warranty & Service Handbook or call your local authorised Subaru Retailer to determine the specific service intervals that apply to your Subaru.

  • Why is regular servicing important?

Keeping to the recommended service intervals involves more than just changing the oil and the odd air filter.

Irregular servicing can also lead to reduced fuel efficiency and increased air pollution, potentially damaging the retained value of your vehicle.

Servicing within the recommended intervals also helps to preserve and maintain the performance, safety and retained value of your Subaru. When you bring your vehicle to an authorised Subaru Service Centre, Subaru technicians will perform various inspections such as inspections of your brake system, tyres, driveline and steering components, and will only use genuine or endorsed Subaru parts and consumables, all vitally important for your safety.

  • When extra servicing is needed?

If you constantly undergo severe driving conditions or drive in harsh environments, then your vehicle will require additional maintenance.

These conditions could include (but are not limited to) any or all of the following:

    - Operating in extremely hot or cold weather
    - Living in coastal areas
    - Towing a trailer
    - Repeated short trips
    - Driving on dusty roads
    - Driving on rough, muddy or snow-melted roads
    - Mountainous area living
    - Extensive idling and/or low speed driving for long distances
    - Continuous high speed driving (at speeds greater than 140 km/h) for over 2 hours
    - Under high performance conditions (e.g. track days)

If you're in doubt as to the best servicing schedule for your vehicle, talk to your Subaru Service Advisor.

  • Does Subaru Australia recommend using additional additives?

Subaru Australia does not recommend the use of chemical additives, which are not specifically required or recommended by Subaru Australia or Subaru Corporation as necessary for the servicing of Subaru vehicles. You should also be aware that the use of non-recommended chemical additives could cause damage that may not be covered by the Manufacturer's warranty.

The recommended replacement specification of oils, lubricants, fuel, coolants and other chemical additives are listed in the workshop manuals, service information, owner's manual and owner's manual supplement for Australia.

  • What is the service period for my car?

Below is the recommended scheduled service intervals for all current generation Subaru vehicles.  The recommended scheduled service interval for your particular car can also be found in the Warranty & Service Handbook that comes with the car.  The service intervals have been developed to help ensure your vehicle continues to operate within specifications for Australian conditions.

Each Subaru model may have a different recommended oil grade. To find the right oil specifications for your vehicle you can check your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual, under Specifications > Engine Oil.

  • Does my Subaru require tyre chains in the snow?

Whether or not chains will be required will depend on several factors such as the climatic conditions, road conditions and depth of snow or ice on the road. Local authorities will generally alert you if chains are required by erecting relevant signage. In some cases, chains may only be required for 2 wheel drive vehicles. As all Subaru vehicles (except BRZ) are All Wheel Drive, chains will not be required on roads where only 2 wheel drive vehicles require chains, other than for BRZ.

Driving on snowy grades or icy roads may require the use of tyre chains, in which case they must only be placed on the front wheels of your Subaru.

Use only the correct size chains so as to not damage any of the suspension or the body of the vehicle.

You must also ensure you do not drive more than 30km/h whilst the chains are fitted. Refer to your Owner's Manual for more information.

EyeSight® driver assist is standard across the range on new Forester, Outback, Liberty and Levorg and is also standard on selected XV and Impreza variants.

Check out our Technology page for more information.

  • What is a Boxer engine?

While most engines stand vertically, ours lay flat. Sitting horizontally in the engine bay, it moves like a boxer’s fists with a punch a counterpunch action. Lightweight, low and flat, it makes for perfect balance and a much lower centre of gravity. It creates less noise and vibration too.

All of this means greater on-road handling for you. More stability. More performance. More fun. And a more confident drive.

Check out our Performance page for more information.

  • What does SRS stand for and how does it improve safety?

SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System. The SRS driver and front passenger airbags are used as supplements to the seat belts to help reduce shocks applied to the head and chest of the driver or front passenger in the event of a frontal impact collision.

The SRS side airbags are used to help reduce the shocks applied to the torso of the driver or front passenger in the event of a side impact collision. The SRS curtain shield airbags are used to help reduce the shocks applied to the head of the driver, front passenger, or rear outer passengers in the event of side or rear side impact collision.

Check out our Safety page for more information.

  • What is the Subaru e-Boxer?

Subaru e-Boxer is our new generation power unit which has been engineered to drive our first hybrid models. Powered by e-Boxer the vehicles feature an electric motor and high voltage battery, combined with a Boxer petrol engine to deliver a totally new driving experience. Subaru e-Boxer operates across 3 different driving modes, that work in synergy with our famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for a performance that has to be experienced. e-Boxer takes ‘what makes a Subaru, a Subaru’ to the next level – and into the future.

  • What is a hybrid electric vehicle?

'Hybrid Electric Vehicle' (HEV) draws power from a combination of sources, usually an internal combustion engine combined with an electric motor. It’s a great driving option which offers a midpoint between a conventional, engine-equipped vehicle and a full 'Battery Electric Vehicle' (BEV).

  • How will Subaru hybrid vehicles differ?

These vehicles are driven by Subaru e-Boxer – a 'mild hybrid' system that uses electric power (from a compact lithium-ion battery and electric motor) to assist the regular internal combustion engine. To maximise the vehicle’s capabilities, Motor Assist technology is used to deliver improved acceleration especially during light-load driving and starting from a stop, where the electric motor excels. This provides a strong and steady performance, while delivering the benefits of improved fuel economy and reduced vehicle emissions (based on testing conducted in accordance with the Australian Design Rules (ADR’s).

  • What are the benefits of a Hybrid?

With Subaru e-boxer our hybrids deliver improved acceleration, especially during light-load driving and starting from a stop, where the electric motor excels. This provides a more enjoyable, strong performance while also delivering improved fuel economy and reduced vehicle emissions (based on testing conducted in accordance with the Australian Design Rules (ADR’s)). The Subaru Hybrid e-Boxer drivetrain all comes intelligently packaged, without altering the cabin and cargo space. The result is a vehicle with the same comfort as a petrol-only vehicle with the added benefits afforded by hybrid technology.

  • What’s the difference between the various types of Hybrids on the market?

There are three common Hybrid Vehicle Types –

    Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV)

In mild hybrid vehicles – like the Subaru Forester and XV – the engine is the main power source, with the relatively small battery/electric motor assisting in certain driving situations, like starting from a stop or at low speeds. The main function of the electric motor is assistance, most MHEVs do not run on electric motor power alone (although some mild hybrids can).

*Subaru Hybrid e-Boxer models are capable of electric-only driving in certain driving conditions.

    Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

Equipped with a large-capacity, high-performance battery and electric motor, full hybrids can also run on electric power alone. They draw power from the engine and electric motor as required depending on driving conditions.

    Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

PHEVs operate in a similar way to a full hybrid but with additional battery capacity for more extended electric-only driving range and the option to charge the battery using an external power source. PHEVs can be plugged into a charging station or household power supply and operate on electric-only driving for ranges greater than full hybrids.

  • Does the e-Boxer hybrid system affect the vehicle height, centre of gravity or overall weight distribution?

Subaru engineers have carefully designed our hybrid system with the battery and other electrical components neatly positioned under the cargo floor, all without compromising the cargo space, height or versatility. The hybrid components have also been strategically placed to retain a low centre of gravity and to achieve optimal front/rear vehicle weight distribution for excellent handling and stability.

  • Does the vehicle stay in All-Wheel Drive when in electric-only driving mode?

Yes, unlike some competitors, Subaru Hybrid e-Boxer vehicles always run in full Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, even during electric-only driving. That’s why Subaru delivers total peace of mind.

  • Do the vehicles make any noise when in electric-only driving mode?

For safety reasons e-Boxer vehicles emit an electronically produced sound to alert pedestrians and nearby vehicles of their proximity. This alert operates at speeds of up to 24km/h when in electric-only driving mode.

  • Can I choose to switch between electric-only and Motor Assist driving?

Subaru’s hybrid vehicles are designed to automatically select the best driving mode for the driving conditions. The sophisticated control unit determines the optimum mode by assessing the driving situation, conditions and driver input. So there is no manual switch to change between modes.

  • What is regenerative braking?

Regenerative braking is a mechanism that automatically recharges the battery while the vehicle is slowing. When you decelerate or brake, kinetic energy from the vehicle’s movement is captured and used to recharge the battery. Delivering the efficiency of a hybrid without ever having to plug it in.

  • Will the high-voltage battery need to be replaced?

Under normal driving use, replacement of the high voltage lithium ion battery should not be required in the first 8 years or 160,000km. However, the battery will naturally lose capacity over time and the way it's used. For peace of mind, the lithium-ion battery is covered by an 8 year/160,000km manufacturer’s warranty, details of which can be found in the Warranty and Service Handbook.  To help maintain battery condition. We also recommend driving the vehicle at least once a month for 30 minutes or more.

  • Are there any special safety precautions to take due to the high-voltage battery?

Subaru e-Boxer vehicles can generally be used just like a petrol-only vehicle. All of the high-voltage components, such as the converter and inverter, are safely packaged and covered under the cargo floor to prevent accidental touching. Please be careful not to touch the parts inside the cover, including the service plug. Should it ever be required, you can jump start your hybrid by connecting the booster cables to the auxiliary battery in the engine bay. Be sure to carefully follow the directions set out in the Owner’s Manual. Do not connect the cables to the restart battery terminals (marked on the red cap), as this will not start the e-Boxer system. Due to risk of serious or life-threatening injury, please do not touch any of the high-voltage components or cables. High-voltage components can be identified by bright orange casing.

  • Are the high-voltage components safe from water damage? What if rain or water gets into the cargo area?

A certain level of waterproofing has been installed in the vehicles to protect the lithium-ion battery and hybrid system components located in the cargo area under normal circumstances and use. To maintain this protection, please make sure you only use the vehicle with the cargo floor board installed. It is particularly important to avoid getting large amounts of water in the cargo area, to prevent electric shocks and/or system malfunction.

  • What do I do if my regular battery becomes flat?

Just like petrol-only vehicles, the engine can be jump started by connecting booster cables to the auxiliary battery in the engine bay. Please follow the Owner’s Manual instructions when doing this. Do not connect the cables to the restart battery terminals (marked on the red cap), as this will not start the e-Boxer system.

  • Can I use my hybrid to jump-start another vehicle with a dead battery?

Yes, you can by using booster cables. Just be sure to connect the cables to the auxiliary battery – and not the restart battery. Please consult the Owner’s Manual prior to your attempt.

  • Are there extra precautions to take in the case of an accident?

Due to risk of serious or life-threatening injury, please do not touch any of the high-voltage components or cables. High-voltage components can be identified by bright orange casing. Also, never touch a leaking battery.

  • Why can’t you provide a combined petrol/electric engine power figure, when other brands can?

Subaru Corporation Japan does not have an official calculation method, so it’s not possible to provide a combined figure that would be meaningful to drivers.

  • What is the range under electric-only power?

Depending on the condition of the vehicle’s high voltage lithium-ion battery, e-Boxer hybrids can travel from a few hundred metres up to 1.6km in electric only mode. However please note that electric-only power is only available under certain driving conditions up to a maximum of 40km/per hour.

  • Is the technology in these vehicles already being superseded?

These hybrid vehicles represent the start of Subaru’s journey as we transition into the new world of electrified powertrains. The Subaru factory has committed to a number of timelines which will see Subaru progressing toward the release of increasingly efficient hybrid and full electric powertrains over time, while at the same time maintaining Subaru’s strict design and engineering standards.

  • Why is this technology only available in Subaru SUVs?

The introduction of our hybrid SUVs is just the beginning and you can expect to see increasing use of new electrified powertrains across the range in the not too distant future.

  • Will there be a hybrid Outback coming?

At this point Subaru is launching the Hybrid e-Boxer variant in the Forester and XV models only.

  • When will Subaru Australia launch its first full hybrid and electric cars, as other brands have done?

While we are committed to bringing this technology to market, we are also committed to taking time to ensure it is up to Subaru’s standard. Manufacture and release dates also depend on factory considerations and Subaru Japan has committed to a definite timeframe and target for minimum volume sales in both hybrid and electric by 2030.

  • Why do the hybrid SUVs not have a full-size, or at the very least, space-saver temporary spare wheel?

Due to the electric components and battery system being securely positioned below the cargo floor, the amount of available space is restricted. However, owners will have the benefit of a practical and effective tyre repair kit in lieu of the spare tyre. The repair kit is easier to remove from the vehicle and will not require the car to be jacked up.

  • As Subaru increases its push towards electrification over the coming years, how will the vehicles change?

The good news is that the features Subaru owners love about our vehicles will only be enhanced by the incorporation of electric and hybrid powertrains. The positioning of these systems within the vehicle design, makes them ideally suited to supporting Subaru’s distinctive symmetry and low centre-of-gravity attributes. Naturally these new technologies will continue to be combined with Subaru’s famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive technology and ongoing safety innovations, such as EyeSight® Driver Assist.
